Large-Format Cinematography: What Does a Bigger Sensor Really Change?

Large-format digital cinema cameras change more than pixel count. They also affect lens behavior, angle of view and the relationship between framing and depth of field.

ARRI’s ALEXA LF uses a sensor slightly larger than full frame and records native 4.5K, while the Mini LF brings a related visual approach into a more compact body.

Large format is not automatically “more cinematic.” Its real value is the additional creative palette it gives cinematographers for shaping faces, space, lenses and perspective.
